- <p> DIED. ALLAN GILBERT ODELL, 90, former advertising manager and
- president of Burma-Vita; in Edina, Minnesota. In 1926, Odell
- created one of the oddest and most memorable gimmicks in the
- history of American advertising--a series of six roadside
- signs, five containing portions of a whimsical couplet and the
- last providing the punctuation of the brand name: GRANDPA'S...OUT
- WITH...JUNIOR'S DATE...OLD TECHNIQUE...WITH BRAND-NEW BAIT...BURMA
- SHAVE. The poems eventually sprang up at 7,000 locations in
- 45 states, becoming an essential part of the popular culture
- of their day.
